Larry Ellison puts on a clinic at RC44 Regatta

BMW ORACLE Racing wins match racing series at RC 44 Cagliari Cup.

BMW ORACLE Racing today won the match racing series of the RC 44 Cagliari Cup finishing the round robin with an 8-1 record. In their first-ever match racing regatta together, BMW ORACLE Racing team owner Larry Ellison was at the helm with team skipper Russell Coutts calling tactics.
“It’s been fantastic racing,” Ellison said. “We have a great team and beat some of the best match racers in the world. The entire team won the regatta. I am enormously proud of this team.”

The RC 44 Cagliari Cup began yesterday with a round robin for the highly-competitive 10-boat fleet. The two-day match racing series was sailed in strong, blustery Sardinia breezes, producing some incredibly close matches and exciting lead changes. BMW ORACLE Racing’s only loss of the nine-race round robin was a one-second delta at the finish.

Six other BMW ORACLE Racing crew members were competing on two other entries and those two teams finished second and third in the match racing. “Larry deserves the win; he sailed really well,” said BMW ORACLE Racing helmsman James Spithill who took second place honors helming Team Ceeref. Posting a 7-2 record for the series, Spithill had BMW ORACLE Racing crew members Michele Ivaldi and Joey Newton on board.

The BMW ORACLE Racing team opened today with a win in their first match of the day against French match racer Sebastien Col. Ellison and crew led Team Hiroshi around the course. In the second race of the day against Mascalzone Latino, BMW ORACLE Racing posted another win following a textbook start where Ellison got the advantage and led around the course.

Following a break in the action to allow the strong Sardinia breeze to moderate, it was the match of the day against double Olympic gold medalist and current Finn world champion Ben Ainslie, sailing with Patrick de Barros on Team ES Bankers Dubai. Ainslie, who has BMW ORACLE Racing crew Max Sirena, Noel Drennan and Daniel Fong on board, as well as sailing team coordinator Julien di Biase, led at the start. In a drag race upwind, BMW ORACLE Racing overtook at the bottom mark. Ellison extended the lead to finish 5-6 boat-lengths ahead of the de Barros crew who finished third overall with a 6-3 record.

The RC 44 circuit is part of the BMW ORACLE Racing team’s overall 2008 sailing program. Other team members sailing with Ellison and Coutts were Dirk de Ridder, Ross Halcrow and Brad Webb.
The fleet racing series of the regatta starts tomorrow and concludes on Sunday April 27.

BMW ORACLE Racing competes in first regatta of the 2008 season.

BMW ORACLE Racing competes in the team’s first competition of the 2008 season starting tomorrow at the RC 44 Cagliari Cup in Italy. Skipper Russell Coutts and team owner Larry Ellison are sharing afterguard duties in their first regatta together.

“This is Larry’s first time sailing the RC 44s and he is really enjoying it,” said BMW ORACLE Racing skipper Russell Coutts. “On our first day of training yesterday, we saw 25 knots of fresh sea breeze off the Sardinia coast. We had a great time shaking down the boat and tuning up with some practice starts and drop set maneuvers. Larry is looking forward to helming this week in both the match racing against the pro skippers and in the fleet racing events against the other owner/drivers. It’s a competitive fleet here and promises to be great racing.” - More news at http://www.bmworacleracing.com/

RC44: The Best Of The Best...

Organised by Yacht Club Cagliari, the second event of the RC 44 Championship Tour 2008 is full of promises, with no less than ten strict one design RC 44’s and world class sailors such as Ben Ainslie, James Spithill, Russell Coutts, Sébastien Col, Cameron Appleton and many more.

The second event of the RC 44 Championship Tour 2008 will take place in Cagliari (Sardinia, ITA), between April 23-27. Organised by Yacht Club Cagliari, with the support of the City of Cagliari, this regatta will assemble some of the world’s best sailors on board ten strict one design RC 44’s.

The Cagliari Cup will start on Wednesday April 23 with the match racing event. After a full round robin, hopefully completed in two days, the team owners will take the helm for three days of fleet racing. A coastal race - the DHL Trophy - will take the fleet around the Gulf of Salinas. The winner of this race will be awarded with the DHL Trophy, whilst the points of the regatta will be incorporated in the fleet race ranking.

Team Hiroshi - Città di Milano (Armando Giulietti and Sébastien Col), current leader of the Championship Tour, will face a strong opposition. Involved for the first time this season, Vincenzo Onorato’s Mascalzone Latino (with pro skipper Jes Gram Hansen) will lead the charge alongside Team Ceeref (Igor Lah / James Spithill), unbeaten in match racing since two events. Russell Coutts will be sailing as a tactician on board P-18, the latest RC 44, fresh out of the yard. Also in Cagliari with great ambitions, Chris Bake and Cameron Appleton - winners of the 2007 Championship Tour - are looking for revenge after a disappointing result in the Dubai RC 44 Cup. Last but not least, triple Olympic medallist Ben Ainslie will discover the RC 44 yachts on board Patrick de Barros’s Team ES Bankers Dubai.

Other teams will look for precious points on the Championship Tour, such as DIMC’s Team Sea Dubai with Marcus Wieser at the helm, Maciej Nawrocki’s Team Organika with another Olympic Champion at the helm, Mateusz Kusznierewicz (POL) or Isao Mita’s Team Beecom (JAP). The RC 44 fleet is currently on its way back from Dubai. The boats will reach Italy (La Spezia) on April 9 and will be transported to Cagliari thanks to Moby Line.

TP52 update from Mr. Cayard

TP52 Portimao, Portugal
We had three races today in 16 to 28 knots. Top speeds of 22 knots were seen by all boats on the runs. With the offshore breeze, the sea was flat and the sky was clear and sunny. It was a beautiful day for the 19 boats here in Portimao.

The winner of the day was Valle Romano-Mean Machine with a 7th and two firsts. Second of the day was Artemis with Russell Coutts as tactician with a 2, 3 and a 5. Third was CaixaGalicia with John Knostecki as tactician with a 3, 4 and 10.

It was important to keep the boat upright during the gybes and almost everyone broached at least once. We had a decent day on Windquest with a 10, 7 and 8 for 25 points, 8th overall. The fleet is tightly bunched in scoring with Siemens/Matador in 6th with 24 points and Stay Calm in 9th with 27 points.

It was a long day with the third race finishing at 1800. All the teams are still on their boats drying out the insides, folding sails, checking the rigs and it is 1915.

It all starts again tomorrow with the first warning at 1300. The forecast is for a bit less wind.

Coutts unhappy with new rules

Team Germany confirmed yesterday they will launch another bid for the America's Cup, taking the number of challengers in the next regatta to five.
But Oracle Racing's new skipper, New Zealander Russell Coutts, continued the American syndicate's attack on the conditions for the 2009 event, saying defenders Alinghi should scrap rule changes.
Team Germany's intention to return to Valencia means they will join a fleet that so far also includes Team New Zealand, Spain's Desafio Espanol, South Africa's Shosholoza and Britain's new Team Origin.
The Germans, in their cup debut, came second-last among the 11 challengers in this year's regatta, and syndicate boss Michael Scheeren said it was important to build on the experience gained. The announcement comes after two significant developments involving Italian teams at the weekend. Luna Rossa, one of the cup heavyweights, decided to call it quits after three campaigns.
Mascalzone Latino suggested amendments to the protocol, or conditions, that Alinghi unveiled for their next defence. Mascalzone head Vincenzo Onorato urged Alinghi to consider retaining the existing class of boat, given the shorter than usual time frame of just two years.
He said Alinghi's proposed new, bigger 27.5m yacht could instead be introduced in the following America's Cup. Onorato also called for the protocol to repeat that of the just-completed regatta.
He said any changes should be negotiated between Alinghi and the commission representing the challengers. That would solve many of the areas of concern over the amount of control the new protocol gave the Swiss defenders. Oracle have taken court action over the protocol and Coutts yesterday also argued for the previous document.
"The solution is very simple: go back to a protocol that made the last edition so successful," he said. "Nobody really gave a justification for this new unacceptable protocol."
Coutts cited one concern as being the disadvantage the challengers were under in not knowing the class rule for the new yacht until October 31.

CAYARD AND TEAM WIN COPA DEL REY MEDCUP

Photos martin-raget.com
Copa Del Rey 2007 - MEDCUP
Alberto Roemmers' Argentinian owned, Spanish sponsored Siemens clinched the overall title in the 22 strong grand prix TP52 class at the 26th Copa del Rey Camper Audi today on the Bay of Palma.

From Paul Cayard: We Won! Siemens/Matador won the Copa del Rey today on the bay of Palma with scores of 4, 5. Never did we finish out of the top 5 in an inshore race!

The boat was fast and when we were back in the fleet we were patient and found opportunties without taking big risks.

Very satisfying for the whole team. For Matador owner Alberto Roemmers this was his first win in the Copa del Rey. It is a pleasure to see a man of his experiences especially yesterday in 22. Knots of wind. Then for the Parada brothers, (Guellermo helmsman and Mariano strategist) lost their father on this day two years ago, Siemens, our great sponsor, won this regatta last year with Patches so two in a row, and for me, I won this regatta 20 years ago on I'll Moro di Venezia with my friend Raul Gardini.

Winning isn't everything but it sure is fun! - http://2007.medcup.org/

Russell Coutts Signs with Oracle

Why is this man smiling? It might have to do with the fact that he has just signed his own ticket to retirement with Larry Ellison. Sources in Europe have reported to us that Russell spoke with Larry on Sunday, July 15th during the Malcesine Cup and has agreed to skipper Oracle Racing and run the program. How much is this deal worth? That’s a good question! We have heard that Larry said “Whatever you want!” Maybe that is why Russell is grinning ear to ear. You may think this is a rumor but it's not. Nice work Russell! -SK
