Audi Med Cup - Alicante - Race Day 2

© Th Martinez/AUDI MEDCUP
[By Paul Cayard] - A big day of racing today with Races 3, 4 and 5 held in 10, 12 and 14 knots of wind, respectively. Course number one (windward, leeward, windward, finish) was used for all three races. Mean Machine had the best day with a fifth and two firsts, while Bribon is in first place with just 15 points.
Onboard Desafio Español we had an up and down day but we are definitely winning the prize for the most boats passed. We shot ourselves in the foot at the start of Race 3 by going over the line early without any real pressure from the boats around us. So, after restarting we passed nine boats and finished 7th. In the second race of the day, we had a good start but went left and that was not the place to be.
We stumbled hard at the leeward gate, getting really slow there and just did not sail very well, so we finished 11th. Just prior to the start of Race 5, we had a string on the tiller break that caused me to lose control of the boat and we went beyond head to wind and fouled Tau. So right after crossing the line, we had to do a 360 degree penalty. Needless to say, we were well in last place. But the boat was fast up and downwind in the 14 knots and we managed to pass 11 boats to finish 5th!
So, the summary for us after the first two days is - the boat is fast and we have just got to stop getting in its way. I am very happy the way we have tuned this boat up, working very diligently on the rig tune, which is the critical element to getting these boats to sail fast through the wind range. Our North Sails by Sandro Benini are good too.
Tomorrow is the coastal race. There will be a scoring gate half way through the race which should be about 30 miles in total. Hopefully, we will have the 12-14 knots of wind that we finished up with today.

Deasfio launched
By Audi MedCup media
Deasfio launched in Valencia after several days of training. Terry Hutchinson will sail with Desafio in Alicante.
After starting their sailing season with a triumph in the GP42 class Desafio are looking to repeat that level of success as they embark on their first season on the AUDI MedCup Circuit. Having had the longest time on the water of the new 2008 build boats the Valencia based team are well up to speed with their boat which will be skippered by Paul Cayard, and only for the City of Alicante Trophy will have Terry Hutchinson on board.

The new Rolf Vrolijk design, which was built in house in Valencia, was launched officially at Desafio’s Port America’s Cup base by Milagrosa Perez, President of the Valencian local government.
Desafio’s director Agustin Zulueta paid a warm tribute to his team who have done a great job building the boat, emphasizing that they hope to fly the flag for Valencia around the AUDI MedCup Circuit and to continue in their winning ways. -http://2008.medcup.org/news/index.php?id=73

Quantum Physics
Terry Hutchinson, Quantum Racing Skipper
Quantum Racing are back in 2008 with a full scale attack on the elusive top step of the Audi MedCup Circuit podium.
Terry Hutchinson, tactician on Steve and Fred Howe's Warpath in 2006, will not only skipper but will also steer the new Botin & Carkeek design which is rapidly nearing completion at Chimo Lopez's Longitute Zero at Burriano near Castellon.
Quantum Sails' President Ed Reynolds will have much the same job as he had with both Warpath and Lexus Quantum, taking an overall view of the project when in build, and then becoming coach and manager during the competition phase.
"Longitude Zero do an amazing job. There were a couple of reasons we choose to build in Spain. Designers Botin & Carkeek have lot of experience with the builders, and it was less expensive to build in Europe than in New Zealand or the United States. This is not true now - with the Euro being so strong."says Reynolds.
The new boat should be ready in mid-April. Reynolds says it will be a very different boat to the last generation of Botin & Carkeek designs: "I think this will be a pretty dramatic departure. It is much more of a bigger boat concept with a higher prismatic coefficient, lower wetted surface aft and more flare, simply put a 'big' TP52." - http://2008.medcup.org

TP52 all over the place...
'New TP52 Mutua Madrilena arrives in Valencia - photo Audi Medcup'
The new Mutua Madrilena arrived in Valencia this week amidst a growing flurry of TP52 activity.
Vascotto and the Mutua Madrileña team are back and mean business, changing from Botin & Carkeek, who designed their 2005 winner Pisco Sour and their 2007 Mutua Madrileña, to a new Judel/Vrolijk design which has just arrived in Valencia from Italy for the final fit out and launching.
“The boat looks fantastic and we are really happy with the construction of the boat.” Vascotto confirmed from the deck of their new boat. The new boat was built at Farno on the Adriatic by Carboland which is managed by Albino Scarpone who was instrumental in the build of the last Luna Rossa America’s Cup boats.
“Obviously Rolf (Vrolijk) has designed a boat which took some of the best parts of the old Artemis which won quite easily last year but I gave him plenty of freedom. I just asked for the fastest boat in the fleet!” Vascotto suggests.
“I don’t think that there will be much difference between the boats. This is the fourth year and so the difference between one generation of boats and the next gets smaller all the time, and the so the gap becomes always smaller. But for sure Rolf has tried to improve still further the construction of the boats and the ideas he has had last year are maybe made a little more extreme this year.” - http://2008.medcup.org/news/

TP52 mix it up

Photo by: Rolex / Carlo Borlenghi
Master magician onboard or not, Torbjorn Tornqvist's Artemis was comprehensively boat of the day posting a 1, 2, 4. Not far behind in that category was Stuart Robinson's Stay Calm (GBR), which managed to avoid any issues with the line, and scored 2, 4, 3 to move into fourth overall. The two other race winners were Doug DeVos' Windquest (USA) with Terry Hutchinson calling the shots and, of course, Eamon Conneely's Patches which, after her problems with the first two starts of the day, stormed around the final course like a scalded cat to finish someway in front of Alberto Roemmers' Siemens.
The three races were held in a fresh northwesterly. The promised rotation from the northeast arrived early and the race committee got off the daily maximum number of windward/leewards in short order. The steadiness of the breeze reflected in a lack of any course changes. The first race involved a 2 nautical mile leg in 12 - 15 knots, whilst the second and third saw a 2.4 nm leg and the wind topping out at around 20 knots on the final run home. Normal Porto Cervo service well and truly resumed, with a bright clear sky and plenty of sunshine. - regattanews.com

TP52 update from Mr. Cayard

TP52 Portimao, Portugal
We had three races today in 16 to 28 knots. Top speeds of 22 knots were seen by all boats on the runs. With the offshore breeze, the sea was flat and the sky was clear and sunny. It was a beautiful day for the 19 boats here in Portimao.
The winner of the day was Valle Romano-Mean Machine with a 7th and two firsts. Second of the day was Artemis with Russell Coutts as tactician with a 2, 3 and a 5. Third was CaixaGalicia with John Knostecki as tactician with a 3, 4 and 10.
It was important to keep the boat upright during the gybes and almost everyone broached at least once. We had a decent day on Windquest with a 10, 7 and 8 for 25 points, 8th overall. The fleet is tightly bunched in scoring with Siemens/Matador in 6th with 24 points and Stay Calm in 9th with 27 points.
It was a long day with the third race finishing at 1800. All the teams are still on their boats drying out the insides, folding sails, checking the rigs and it is 1915.
It all starts again tomorrow with the first warning at 1300. The forecast is for a bit less wind.

CAYARD AND TEAM WIN COPA DEL REY MEDCUP

Copa Del Rey 2007 - MEDCUP
Alberto Roemmers' Argentinian owned, Spanish sponsored Siemens clinched the overall title in the 22 strong grand prix TP52 class at the 26th Copa del Rey Camper Audi today on the Bay of Palma.
From Paul Cayard: We Won! Siemens/Matador won the Copa del Rey today on the bay of Palma with scores of 4, 5. Never did we finish out of the top 5 in an inshore race!
The boat was fast and when we were back in the fleet we were patient and found opportunties without taking big risks.
Very satisfying for the whole team. For Matador owner Alberto Roemmers this was his first win in the Copa del Rey. It is a pleasure to see a man of his experiences especially yesterday in 22. Knots of wind. Then for the Parada brothers, (Guellermo helmsman and Mariano strategist) lost their father on this day two years ago, Siemens, our great sponsor, won this regatta last year with Patches so two in a row, and for me, I won this regatta 20 years ago on I'll Moro di Venezia with my friend Raul Gardini.
Winning isn't everything but it sure is fun! - http://2007.medcup.org/
