Awhile back BMW Oracle had a small area off the back beam covered in a wing foil shape with a bunch of telltales attached to it to see if they could reduce drag. The results proved that yes they could reduce drag by adding a foil shape to the back of the beam. What you see here is the full version running across the whole boat made of sail cloth.
