Sailing Is Not a Sport!

So over the weekend at a sailing event dinner, I was told by a fellow sailor that sailing is not a sport but an activity! With disbelief I asked "How can you say that"? He answered, "Well sailing is an activity because you are not exerting energy". Someone at the table replied "Maybe you're not trying hard enough"! Which made me wonder...is it true that if you are not sweating then you are not playing a sport?

Wikipedia's definition of the word "Sport" is "an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively". I don't know about you but it sure sounds to me that sailing boat racing has rules and is highly competitive. As for the sweating part... sailing might be one of the only sports where having a few beers the night before and racing the next day with a hangover is the norm for some, but those true to the "sport" see it as sport!
