US Men's and Women's Championship begins

Mallory and Adams Cup 2007 - San Diego, CA - Sept 12-15
Three sailors to have home-wave advantage
Three San Diego area crews will compete in a pair of US Sailing national championships this weekend out of Southwestern Yacht Club. Brian Camet and Chris Busch will skipper Etchells sloops in the Mallory Cup while Colleen Cooke will compete in the Adams Cup.
The Mallory Cup is US Sailing's men's national club championship. The Adams Cup is the women's national club championship. Eleven identical Etchells sloops will race in both events. Camet and Busch will represent San Diego Yacht Club in the four-day competition being sailed off Point Loma. Cooke is representing the host club.
Camet, with father Daniel and brother Alex as his crew, qualified for the Mallory Cup by winning US Sailing's Area J eliminations. Busch, who will be sailing with Bill Bennett and Mike Herlihy, is a supplemental entry.
Cooke, who has Summer Greene and Patricia Bazan as crew, finished second to Mary Snow in the Area J finals. But Snow was unable to compete in the national championships because of prior commitments.
Snow won the Adams Cup in 2000. She is the only local champion of an event that began in 1924 as the first women's national sailing championship. The Mallory Cup has been sailed since 1952. No local crew ever has won the event. -By Bill Center UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER
